Free IELTS Reading mock test online
The most useful Reading practice is a full test against the clock, on the same kind of screen you will use on exam day. That is what you get here: complete IELTS Academic Reading mocks, free and without signing up, on a phone or a computer.
Every mock is complete: three passages, 40 questions and a 60-minute timer. As soon as you submit, you see which questions went wrong and an estimated band.
Exam format
The Academic Reading section works like this:
- Time: 60 minutes. On computer, you type your answers straight into the screen.
- Passages: three sections totalling roughly 2,150–2,750 words. They come from books, journals, magazines, newspapers and online sources, written for a non-specialist reader, on topics pitched at undergraduate or postgraduate level. At least one passage contains a detailed logical argument.
- Questions: 40, one mark each. Your total is then converted to a band on the 0–9 scale.
- Question types: the official format uses eleven, including multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, matching headings, and sentence and summary completion.
Passages usually get harder as you go: the third is typically longer and more abstract than the first. So rather than splitting your time evenly, leave extra minutes for the last one.
How our mock works
The screen follows computer-delivered IELTS: the passage on the left, questions on the right, a question-number panel at the bottom and the timer at the top. On a phone, you switch between passage and questions with tabs.
- Highlight words and add notes to the passage, as in the real test.
- Flag a question you are unsure about and jump back to it from the bottom panel.
- Make the text larger if you need to.
- Answers are saved in your browser as you go, so a reload won't lose them. When time runs out, the test submits itself.
After submitting, you see your answer and the correct one for every question. Sign in with Google or Telegram to keep your results and track your progress from one mock to the next.
Every passage and question was written for this project and checked by a teacher. Nothing is copied from books or other websites, so you won't have seen them before.
